When Solo, the leader of a gang of street urchins, falls ill, his best friend steals the vaccine, but returns too late to save him. The boy, who names himself Duo in honor of his late friend, and his remaining friends are rescued by the Maxwell Church after being caught stealing from a military base. Duo is adopted out to several families but is returned to the Maxwell Church every time, and finally remains there.
The Maxwell Church Tragedy occurs later in the year. Father Maxwell and Sister Helen die in the crossfire after being taken hostages by terrorrists fighting Alliance. Duo Maxwell is the only survivor

The Alliance officially condemns colony L5-A0206, one of the first colonies constructed. General Septem, the man in charge of the operation, orders the use of poison gas to "sanitize" the colony. Treize Khushrenada is opposed to this and sends mobile suits to get the job done first. The colony is defended by the newly-married Chang Wu Fei and his wife Long Mei Lan, piloting an incomplete Shenlong Gundam and a prototype Tallgeese respectively. They manage to thwart both attacks, though Mei Lan is killed in action. Alliance officer Sally Po erroneously reports that the operation was a success, further protecting the colony.
